The Birnam Inn
A rural pub shaped by place, people and community
Set within the old stables of the historic Birnam Hotel, the Birnam Inn Pop-Up Pub reimagines the spirit of the traditional coaching inn and village pub through a contemporary lens. Delivered in under one month and with virtually no budget, the project focused on creating a strong sense of identity through atmosphere, materiality, storytelling and improvisation.
Rooted in the local community, the pub centres around simple Scottish fare — seasonal pies, classic sides, and a curated selection of Scottish beers — creating a space that feels generous, familiar, and accessible. Inspired loosely by the layered character of old roadside inns — places of gathering, warmth, and temporary refuge — the interior combines reclaimed elements, modest interventions, and an intentionally unfussy palette to create something both familiar and unexpected. Existing textures and imperfections were embraced rather than concealed, allowing the history of the stables to shape the space naturally.
